In anticipation of our upcoming concert, I will be posting a recording of this year's University Singers from the University of Delaware each day until the concert.
I first performed Rubstov's "Veniki" as an undergraduate as part of LSU's 1995 invitational performance at the ACDA convention in Washington D.C. I came across this treble voice arrangment and I think it works just as well as the original, which doesn't happen often.
The text is somewhat nonsensical - a Russian tongue twister similar to "rubber baby buggy bumpers" or "she sells sea shells by the seashore" in English. The literal meaning is, "Brooms, brooms, yes brooms - sweepers yes on the hearth laid about, yes from the hearth were torn off. Godfather Gabriel, godfather Gabriel, I to Gabriel was saying."
Here is the UD University Singers performing "Veniki" by Rubstov. This arrangment is available from Musica Russica (www.musicarussica.com).
If you are in the area, be sure and come to our spring concert. We will be performing works by Tarik O'Regan, Bach, Schumann, Verdi, Mendelssohn, and others. University Singers will be accompanied by Wendy McNally and the concert will also feature UD's own Noël Archambeault.
