In anticipation of our upcoming concert, I will be posting a recording of this year's University Singers from the University of Delaware each day until the concert.
My friend Susan LaBarr arranged this Stephen Foster tune for the Women's Chorus at UNT in 2009, at that time conducted by my friend Jeremy Wirths. It's a beautiful arrangement, but it can be difficult to capture the emotion of the weeping mother in the a cappella texture.
I crossed my fingers and set the girls loose on this one, and they developed a sound that was rich and full, but still tuned well. The weeping mother was expressed with strong, emotional singing that brought tears to the eyes of audience members on our fall tour. This arrangement is available from Santa Barbara Music Publishers (www.sbmp.com).
If you are in the area, be sure and come to our spring concert. We will be performing works by Tarik O'Regan, Bach, Schumann, Verdi, Mendelssohn, and others. University Singers will be accompanied by Wendy McNally and the concert will also feature UD's own Noël Archambeault.
